Mind behind Mintd

The path that led our founder on his journey to build Mintd

Jaisal Mariwala
Founder & CEO of Mintd

Jaisal moved to New York to work on Wall Street right after he graduated college from Duke University in the United States. He spent years at J.P. Morgan and Citigroup, building and trading portfolios for institutional clients. He had a front row seat to what works, and more importantly what doesn’t work, when it comes to investing. It was here that he formed his views on how he believes everyday investors should invest to create long term wealth. In 2019, after many years in the US, Jaisal felt an itch to come back home. He knew he wanted to build something in India, for Indians, and felt like it was the exact right time. Naturally, when he moved back, he started to help out his friends with their investing decisions again, navigating his way around the Indian market landscape. He was struck by two things that were different here. First, how financial institutions bombarded us daily with infinite investing options through ads everywhere, including on TV using cricketers and celebrities. And second, how so many of his smart, ambitious, well-educated friends wanted to invest, but didn’t know the first thing about how to, or even where to, begin. Triggered by these two realizations, Jaisal set out to discover exactly why things in India were the way they were, and how he could build a solution to help improve them.

The journey before Mintd

June 2014 - August 2017, New York

Jaisal started his career in finance at J.P. Morgan in New York right out of college. There, he was responsible for building and trading global portfolios for institutional clients. He specialized in custom baskets, ETFs, and index derivatives trading. He helped clients brainstorm, and implement sector-specific and thematic macro trades worth billions of dollars daily.

Aug 2017 - May 2019, New York

After that, Jaisal moved to Citi, to try his hand at trading stocks. He traded the internet, media, and telecom sectors on Citi’s US equities trading desk. His role included understanding each of these sectors - and the stocks within them - deeply, and helping large clients like hedge funds and asset managers navigate them.

June 2019 - May 2021, Mumbai

After years in finance, Jaisal moved back to India to head strategy and sales at India’s largest food solutions company. He managed a 200+ person team, and helped rebuild the business from ground up after the entire food sector was deeply affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

September 2021 - Present, Mumbai

Jaisal’s unique combination of experiences in finance in New York, food operations in India, and informally as de facto ‘investment guru’ amongst his friends and colleagues, led him to building Mintd - the digital wealth manager for every Indian.

MISSION

Why we started Mintd

Our mission and the problem statement behind it drive every decision we make at Mintd

Our mission is simple - we want to empower Indians to invest intelligently and make sound financial decisions. Right now only 2% of Indians invest in the equity markets, which means the other 98% are missing out on a huge wealth creation opportunity. A big driver of that gap is the number of options and the amount of information out there, both of which have made the process of investing seem increasingly complex. Meanwhile, high-quality wealth management services are reserved for the top 0.1% of the country, only increasing the wealth gap between them and everybody else. We want to change that. We want to help underinvested Indians decide exactly where and how much to invest based on how much risk they’re willing and able to take.
